Day 1

Welcome to NEWPORT, Rhode Island, America's first resort town in the "Ocean State". Founded in 1971, "Christmas in Newport" began as a two-week festival that celebrated the noncommercial traditions of the holiday season. In a community collaboration among residents, businesses and the city, only clear bulbs illuminate the scenic harbor and wharves and the Victorian splendor of Bellevue Avenue. The lights are meant to simulate candlelight and recapture the candlelit holidays of bygone days.

Check into the WAYFINDER NEWPORT HOTEL for a three-night stay.

DINNER is included this evening.

Day 2

BREAKFAST is included this morning at your hotel.

Meet your LOCAL GUIDE at the Transportation Center. Enjoy the charm of Newport's historic buildings and restored homes on this narrated tour covering over 150 points of interest. Take in the rugged beauty of Ten-Mile Ocean Drive and the fabulous mansions along tree-lined Bellevue Avenue.

Marble House and The Elms --two National Historic Landmarks and icons of the Gilded Age in America--are filled with thousands of poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens and wreaths. A total of 28 decorated Christmas trees reflecting individual room decor anchor many of the magnificent spaces. Dining tables set with period silver and china complete the elegant setting. The windows of each mansion are lit with individual white candles, in keeping with the colonial tradition.

Admission is included to tour MARBLE HOUSE, built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. It was a summer house, or "cottage", as "Newporters" called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. But Marble House was much more; it was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport's subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. Fireplace mantels on the second floor of Marble House will be decorated by regional garden clubs in a friendly competition.

There will be free time for lunch on your own downtown. Take time to explore all the shops and museums on the Harbor front.

Admission is included on a self-guided tour of the ELMS MANSION. The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris.
The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you as you tour The Elms magnificent mansion decked out in Yuletide finery. Thousands of poinsettias, spectacular evergreens, fragrant trees, decorated wreaths, fresh flowers and 19th century style ornaments turn The Elms and its grounds into a Christmas wonderland.

Return to your hotel.

DINNER is included this evening.

Day 3

BREAKFAST is included this morning at your hotel.

Admission on a self-guided tour of CHATEAU-SUR-MER. A landmark of High Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling. It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s. Chateau-sur-Mer's grand scale and lavish parties ushered in the Gilded Age of Newport. The house was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore.

Next stop…… THE NEWPORT PLAYHOUSE.
LUNCHEON BUFFET
CABARET with dessert service.
Curtain… On The Farce Day of Christmas by Ken Levine
To keep her religious mother from knowing she's divorced, Wendy pays her ex-husband to accompany her to her parents' home in Utah for Christmas and pretend they are still happily married. Predictably, from the moment they arrive, things start to go horribly wrong, and the more Wendy and Gary try to keep up the pretense, the more things descend into chaos.

Enjoy the SPARKLING LIGHTS, an outdoor & indoor Magical Wonderland at the BREAKERS MANSION. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. The perfect ambiance of a Gilded Age holiday.

Return to the hotel.
Dinner is on your own.
